FAQS ON THE INTERNATIONAL TEAM

Who is Eligible to Apply for the InciSioN Global IT?

Eligibility is open to anyone considered "youth" who has a genuine interest and stake in global surgery. This primarily includes students, trainees, residents, and early-career professionals from fields such as medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, public health, and engineering, as well as those with biomedical or medical backgrounds. If you are passionate about advancing global surgery, making a tangible impact, and aligning with our mission to lead the movement toward safe, timely, accessible, and affordable surgical care, we encourage you to apply. Nevertheless, there are qualities we look for in applicants that must be taken into consideration when applying. See more FAQs below.

Can junior doctors and residents also apply?

Absolutely! We encourage applications from junior doctors as well as surgical trainees, residents, and early-career professionals in fields such as medicine, nursing, public health, occupational therapy, and biomedical engineering. Even individuals from non-traditional healthcare backgrounds who impact global surgery are welcome.

Junior doctors and residents, as early-career professionals, bring a particularly valuable perspective to our team. With experience that goes beyond student training, they often have firsthand insight into gaps in surgical care, making them instrumental in identifying and addressing these needs. Their involvement is crucial in driving grassroots initiatives to tackle real-world deficiencies that may not yet be visible to students.

However, we recognize that participation as an early-career professional differs from that of students. Junior doctors and others at this career stage are often balancing complex schedules and heavier professional commitments. Therefore, we place an added emphasis on the importance of time management and a realistic commitment to the role. While we understand and respect the demands of early professional life, we ask that applicants from these backgrounds be prepared to allocate consistent time for their involvement. This commitment is key to ensuring effective collaboration and meaningful contributions to our initiatives.

Can a first-year medical student join the International Team?

Absolutely! First-year medical students, along with all students from healthcare-related backgrounds such as nursing, public health, biomedical engineering, and even PhD students, are welcome to join InciSioN Global. While it’s less common, we also have space for pre-medical and bachelor’s-level students interested in global surgery.

For students at an early stage, joining the team brings both unique challenges and opportunities. However, as a junior member, you’ll experience a steep learning curve, which can be intense but also incredibly rewarding. You’ll have the chance (and responsibility) to gain knowledge and skills at a pace that may surpass that of your peers, giving you a head start in the field. While you may bring less experience to the table initially, your fresh perspective and willingness to learn will be highly valued, and your early start will open up a lot of room for growth.

Ultimately, it depends on your commitment and readiness to dive into a fast-paced environment. For those with the motivation to take on this challenge, it can be an incredible journey, providing a foundation that will set you apart as you continue your studies and career.

What if I do not belong to any profession directly related to Global Surgery or the scope of the subteams' work?

This depends on your background. If you’re in a healthcare-related field outside of medicine, nursing, public health, occupational therapy, or biomedical engineering, we’ll still consider your application. You can select "Other" in the application to specify your background, and we encourage you to explain how your skills could support global surgery.

For applicants from non-healthcare fields—such as marketing, business, graphic design, political science, etc.—we’re developing alternative programs tailored to leverage these skills in support of our mission. These programs are designed to provide a meaningful way for you to contribute while also offering you valuable experience and useful recognition that can enhance your career and CV. This way, you’ll be able to make an impact in global surgery in a role that aligns well with your professional background and goals.

Does there first need to be an active National Working Group in order for me to apply?

You do NOT need to be part of an existing InciSioN branch (known as a National Working Group, or NWG) to apply to the International Team, nor does there need to be an NWG active in your country. Our International Team operates separately from local NWGs, with InciSioN Global primarily focusing on coordination among them and providing them with resources to succeed.

While it’s not necessary to have an NWG in your country to join the International Team, we do encourage team members to stay connected with any nearby NWGs to share ideas and support each other. Joining the International Team can also provide a strong foundation if you’re interested in setting up or contributing to a future NWG in your country. You’ll gain insights into our organizational structure and the core global surgery principles we advocate, which could help you lead or support initiatives at the national level down the road.

InciSioN Global can be a great starting point for understanding how an international non-profit operates and how to apply this structure within a national setting if that’s of interest.

How do I pick my TOP subteam preferences?

When selecting your top sub-team preferences, choose the ones that genuinely interest you the most or where you feel you can make the greatest impact. This should be based on your enthusiasm or where you believe your skills will best support InciSioN Global’s mission—not solely on what you think might be most advantageous for your career.

It’s common to have misconceptions about which roles may benefit one’s own career more, but in reality, the value lies in the work you produce and what you have to show for it. Each sub-team role offers its own unique benefits and opportunities for growth, and what truly stands out is the contribution you make, not the title of the position.

So, select the teams that resonate with you, either through experience or interest, and where you feel most motivated to contribute. Ultimately, it’s your commitment and the work you accomplish within the team that will create lasting value for both the organization and your own development.

What qualities make a strong candidate?

A strong candidate is someone who demonstrates a real commitment to managing their time effectively. We understand that youth today are involved in multiple responsibilities, so we value applicants who prioritize well and can commit to a consistent involvement with InciSioN Global. Time management, not just in theory but in practice, is a key quality we look for, as our work often requires steady engagement and dedication.

What are some application recommendations?

Firstly, starting in 2025, we’ll also be hosting Open Houses for applicants. These sessions will provide insights into different roles within InciSioN Global, answer frequently asked questions, and help you decide if this opportunity is the right fit for you. Open houses are announced on our social media, so stay tuned!

For your application, here’s what we look for:

Therefore it is highly recommended to answer as much of the “Skills and Placement Test” as possible, even questions clearly very targeted to specific groups. The fact is many skills overlap between teams, and answering as many of the questions as possible allows us to get a holistic picture of the applicant, which is especially helpful when we are unable to match good applicants to their top preferences. This helps in offering other subteams not in their top preferences to the best of our ability.

Following these guidelines can help you submit a strong application that highlights your commitment, readiness, and potential contributions to InciSioN Global.
